THERE will be only one show in town this weekend when Dublin aim for their 26th All-Ireland Senior Football title against Mayo.
Jim Gavin’s charges will also be aiming to do what no Dublin team has done since the halcyon days of Heffo’s Army – win back-to-back titles.
The Boys in Blue last achieved that feat when they beat Kerry and Armagh in 1976 and 1977 respectively.
By this stage every cow in every field in Mayo knows that the Westerners have not lifted the Sam Maguire Cup since 1951 and have remarkably lost their last seven finals going back to the 1980s.
If ever there was a county that deserved a break in an All-Ireland decider it’s Mayo who will be bidding for only their fourth senior title on Sunday.
If Dublin v Kerry clashes have been the catalyst for the GAA’s rich sporting tradition down through the years, Dublin v Mayo match-ups haven’t been far behind in terms of quality and high drama.
Last year, it took a semi-final replay to separate the sides at the semi-final stage while in 2013, Mayo’s hearts were broken once again when the Dubs won the final by just a point in another gigantic tussle.
So can Stephen Rochford’s Mayo team finally reach the Holy Grail or will Jim Gavin’s marvellous marauders prevail once again?
