REVIEW: Deadpool is dead good

NOT another super-hero, comic book movie I hear you cry. Haven’t we had enough already? Well maybe, but here’s one with something fresh to offer, that you won’t have seen the like of before.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, ‘Deadpool’ tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool.

Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

The film is action packed, moves along at breakneck speed and is crammed full of witty one liners. A perfect vehicle for the ever sarcastic Ryan Reynolds to showcase his acting talent in a role that suits his sardonic style down to the ground.

Straight from the opening credits where instead of actors names we are treated to self-mocking titles such as “moody teen”, “gratuitous cameo” and “comic relief”, the film sets out its stall as something that’s more than happy to poke fun at itself and others.

‘Deadpool’ is written by the same team that brought us the 2009 hit, ‘Zombieland’ and it’s no surprise that they have taken so long to come up with another winner. Rarely will you find a movie where so much is packed into each line of dialogue. It seems the writers wanted to take every opportunity to search for jokes and they found them.

The only slight problem I have with this film is that it feels like a comic onslaught at times and some of the quips are lost in the haze of hilarity.

But that’s not a bad criticism and one that can be resolved with a second viewing that may unearth laughs that were missed the first time round.

‘Deadpool’ is a violent film and has lots of adult humour that may not suit younger kids, but overall the charm and wit of Reynolds wins the day, in a film that we score an impressive 4 out of 5 stars.
