Hackett Bridge is nominated for award

NOMINATED: Rosie Hackett Bridge has been nominated for an Irish Architecture Award.

ROSIE Hackett Bridge is among 36 projects shortlisted for this year’s Irish Architecture Awards.

The bridge, which was officially opened last year, is named after the trade union leader and Irish Citizen Army member, and it’s the only Liffey bridge named after a woman.

Hackett Bridge spans the Liffey between Marlborough Street on the Northside and Hawkins Street on the Southside. It was developed by Dublin City Council in partnership with the National Transport Authority (NTA) and the Rail Procurement Agency (RPA).

Dublin City Council Road Design Division managed the project and the bridge was designed by Roughan & O’Donovan Consulting Engineers and Seán Harrington Architects.

The NTA funded its cost of around

?¬13.5million. Sean Harrington, principle architect with Sean Harrington Architects said the bridge has been designed to sit comfortably in a sensitive and historic setting.

“Despite the fact that the bridge is for heavy traffic, it is elegant, calm and people-friendly,

? he added.

“The edges are visually open and permeable, where pedestrians can lean on the angled balustrade, rest on integrated seating, or enjoy the planting and flowers, taking full advantage of the river views in this new public place.

“The bridge is a single span concrete structure, with a very shallow structural depth, with the underside following a gentle parabolic curve, tightening before reaching the quay walls, forming abutments.

Rosie Hackett Bridge will be up against 35 other projects for an award, including Dalkey Heritage Centre & Town Hall, Athlone Community College and the Pavilion of Light at Mardyke Gardens in Cork.

Now in its eight year, the popular Public Choice Award gives the public an opportunity to have a say on city architecture by voting for a shortlisted project, which has a chance of being named Ireland’s favourite building.

This year’s awards received 120 entries across 16 categories. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on June 18 in Dublin City Council Civic Offices at Wood Quay.

The public can vote for their favourite building online at www.riai.ie until midday on June 17.
