A DUBLIN city councillor has vowed to pursue additional social housing units for the north inner city following the announcement of a

?¬300 million investment fund.

Last week Northside People reported that the new investment programme, jointly backed by the Housing Finance Agency (HFA) and the European Investment Bank, will target an additional 2,000 social housing units, which are to be developed over the next three years.

News of this programme, the first ever support for housing in Ireland by the European Investment Bank, was announced by Minister for the Environment and Local Government, Alan Kelly, along with Minister of State for Housing, Paudie Coffey, during a visit to the north inner city. Under the terms of the new scheme, customers can be offered 25 years’ fixed rate funding at competitive rates, to buy their new home.

Ray McAdam, a Fine Gael councillor, who represents the north inner city local electoral area, has welcomed the announcement.

“This scheme will benefit both local residents by providing better homes and reduced energy costs, as well as new work for local construction firms,

? said Cllr McAdam.

“I will be working closely with my colleague, the Minister for Housing, Paudie Coffey, to ensure some of this funding is secured for vital inner city housing projects, similar to the funded projects like the Fr McVerry Trust’s plans to refurbish St Agatha’s Court along the North Strand, and Sophia Housing’s plans for Seán McDermott Street.
