A NUMBER of students, including some from the Northside, travelled to Dublin Castle last Monday week (February 9) to help launch Safer Internet Day.
Safer Internet Day, an initiative of the European Commission’s Safer Internet Programme, marks an annual opportunity to engage in making the internet a safer and better place for children and young people.
Since its first edition in 2004, Safer Internet Day has grown tremendously to reach more than 100 countries worldwide, including all 28 countries of the European Union.
The campaign is promoted in Ireland by Webwise, the internet safety initiative of the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST). The theme of Safer Internet Day 2015 was
‘Let’s create a better internet together’.
Its aim was to encourage all stakeholders – children and young people, parents and carers, teachers and educators, or industry and politicians – to join together in marking the day and working together to build a better internet for all, but particularly for children and young people.
A new report on children’s use of the internet launched to mark Safer Internet Day 2015 has found that Irish schools are considerably above the EU average in tackling internet safety issues amongst students. The full report can be downloaded at www.netchildrengomobile.eu/reports.
