Decision time for Northside TDs

Reform Alliance TD for Dublin Bay North, Terence Flanagan and Deputy Finian McGrath (Ind)

DUBLIN Bay North TD Finian McGrath (Ind) seems certain to contest the next general election as a member of the Alliance headed by TDs Shane Ross and Michael Fitzmaurice.

At the time of going to press, Deputy McGrath, who was first elected to the Dáil in the 2002 General Election, did not give Northside People a definitive answer as to whether he would be nailing his colours to the Alliance mast.

However, the indications are that he will be one of the Alliance’s most high profile candidates seeking election to the next Dáil.

“If I can agree a comprehensive programme with it (the Alliance) and if my election team supports it, I will contest the next general election with the Alliance,

? he said.

“The reaction among my supporters and constituents (to joining the Alliance) has been very positive so far as they all know that I will always be an Independent.

Deputy McGrath said the main issues he will be campaigning for in the next election are health, disability, cystic fibrosis, education, radical new ideas on job creation, fair taxation, senior citizens’ issues and developing the peace process on the island.

“The whole political system needs radical reform,

? he declared.

“I want a more just society for the most vulnerable people in the country.

Deputy McGrath said it was difficult to say how many seats the Alliance could win, but he would be

“delighted with 20

?.

When asked if he would like to be considered to lead the Alliance if it were to elect a leader, he replied:

“Not particularly, but you never know in politics. All I really want is a good quality programme implemented. Then I would be happy.

Northside People asked if there could be post-election problems if some of the Alliance TDs could not agree on policies, Deputy McGrath responded:

“Not if our programme is solid and implemented. I would be optimistic that a group of Independent TDs would stick together to deliver reform and quality services.

Deputy McGrath said that as part of the Alliance, he would also be open to a coalition with other parties after the election

“if they agree to implement our programme and radical reform at all levels

?.

Meanwhile, Reform Alliance TD for Dublin Bay North, Terence Flanagan, said he has made no decision yet as to whether he will be joining Deputy Lucinda Creighton’s new, and as yet, unnamed party. The temporary name is Reboot Ireland.

“I deeply admire what Lucinda and Eddie (Hobbs) are trying to achieve,

? Deputy Flanagan told Northside People.

“Small businesses in Dublin Bay North have been crucified by this Government, where what was promised was something completely different.

“In politics, cronyism remains as bad as under the previous administration, and anyone who expresses independent views within the establishment parties is silenced.

“I support a new party that has at its core independence and difference but also one that will promote entrepreneurism and reward public servants who have the most to contribute.

Deputy Flanagan added:

“I support the principles that Reboot Ireland have outlined.
