WHILE millions of people were watching Ben Haenow being crowned the 2014 X-Factor winner, a Northside firm was proving to be a major backstage force at the event.
Clonshaugh-based Magnet.ie provided the connectivity behind the much-anticipated final at the Wembley Arena in London.
The show was one of many events which Magnet powered in 2014 within the Wembley Park complex, which is establishing itself as the English capital’s
‘smart city’ for its pioneering use of connectivity technology.
Mark Kellett, chief executive of Magnet, said:
“The enormous public interest which an event like X-Factor attracts, places extreme demands on broadband, in terms of streaming, the digital team and other backstage requirements.
“Our expertise in delivering ultra-high speed connectivity solutions and our global fibre network put us in a unique position to deliver a project like this.

Earlier this year Magnet, through its UK subsidiary Velocity 1, was also behind the Riot Games event, which attracted 12,000 gaming fans to the Wembley Arena and streamed globally to millions worldwide via a 20Gb connection; and to the growing NFL games at Wembley, all of which require vast amounts of connectivity and expertise on the part of the engineers.
Magnet is also working with developers to ensure new builds are constructed to a specification that will enable new forms of smart living at Wembley Park, allowing fridges which text when items need to be replenished, the ability to turn on and off your heating remotely and provide home energy data and usage analytics.
