Tide of goodwill for seal pup

WHEN local man Dave Tuite went for a swim at Low Rock, Malahide, last Monday morning (December 1), he came across this little seal pup sitting on a rock.

“He seemed totally relaxed and unbothered by me or my fellow swimmers,

? Mr Tuite told Northside People.

“I thought he was sick or injured so I contacted Fingal County Council. I really wasn’t sure if they could help but they were great.

The council put Mr Tuite in touch with Seal Rescue Ireland, a not-for-profit organisation which rehabilitates seal pups back to full health and returns them to the wild when they are fit and ready.

Mr Tuite sent Seal Rescue Ireland a video of the pup and it was deemed to be fine.

“I was worried as the tide was going out fast,

? he explained.

“Myself and fellow swimmer, Nicky, waited to see if the pup would make it back. We kept a couple of curious dogs away meanwhile.

“About 9.30am, the sun shone on the seal and he seemed to wake up all of a sudden.

“He slowly and clumsily made his way back the hundred metres to the water. We tried to direct him the easiest route, over sand, not sharp rock.

“Once in the sea he took one look back and was gone.

Mr Tuite added:

“Later on, after collecting my kids from school in Portmarnock, we all went back to Low Rock to check the seal was okay. I was pleased to see him playfully ducking and swimming about.
