THE Mayor of South Dublin has announced he’s cutting his own wages and diverting the money to three local groups.
Sinn Féin’s Fintan Warfield said the wage deduction will be taken at source and given to three organisations that work within priority areas he set out when taking office last June.
The money will go to Saoirse Women’s Refuge in Tallaght, the national organisation for LGBT young people, BeLonG To, and Citywise in Jobstown who provide young people with educational support.
“Ireland has a growing gap between the haves and have-nots,
? Mayor Warfield said.
“In an attempt to highlight excessive wages in the political establishment, I’m taking a pay cut of 10 per cent to my
?¬30,000 mayoral salary.
“When taking office in June, I pledged to focus on those in society who have been left out or left behind. I wanted to be a campaigning mayor – campaigning for change, for inclusion and for equality.
“I want to highlight the ongoing housing and homeless crisis in our county; promote LGBT rights, marriage equality and inclusive workplaces; and promote practical solutions
to the youth unemployment crisis.
The mayor said he would make a
?¬1,000 donation to each of the three groups he chose.
“It is my wish that through this donation to each of the three groups, I can help make a small difference in their daily operation.
