Baldoyle Musical Society continues to entertain the locals

NOW in its 43rd year Baldoyle Musical Society is as strong and as vibrant as ever.

With over 70 active members drawn from Baldoyle and surrounding areas this society will be around for many years to come.

Performing both a pantomime and a traditional musical each year the society provides a terrific outlet for creative talent, and not just performing talent. Chairman Richie Smith has been a member for over 30 years and is very proud of what the society has achieved.

“We have been entertaining people for over four decades and along the way we have given hundreds of members an opportunity to develop their talent,

? Mr Smith tells Northside People.

“Contrary to popular belief, this is not confined to singing and dancing. Our members have excelled at writing, directing, costume design, set building, props and scenic painting.

One of the great traits of the society is that the age of the membership ranges from seven to over 70 and while many great friendships have been formed among peer groups, working with other age groups adds a terrific dynamic and experience for all concerned. Again, Mr Smith is keen to reflect on one of the society’s claims to fame.

“BMS has an enviable record as a matchmaker with countless marriages and relationships being formed,

? he says.

“Many members have also made lifelong friends after joining.

The Pantomime is performed every January and is attended by over 2,000 patrons each year. Generations of the same families have now featured both onstage and amongst the audiences.

A musical is produced each year in late April. Last year’s productions were

‘Sleeping Beauty’ and Cole Porter’s

‘Anything Goes’ with both carrying on the great tradition of high quality live entertainment.

Having live orchestras for both productions is a popular aspect of Baldoyle’s shows which adds tremendously to the quality and enjoyment.

One of the major factors contributing to the longevity and success of Baldoyle Musical Society has been the availability of a permanent home in which to rehearse, store props and costumes, and to perform.

For this the Society is indebted to St Mary’s Secondary School for the use of the hall. In 1973, Sr Conleth generously gave the Society the use of the hall on the basis that it was a community-based group catering for local audiences.

The group has also benefited greatly from the freely given skills of many craftsmen who have provided top-class sets and props. Their workmanship has become a hallmark of Baldoyle Musical Society, often envied by fellow groups.

Baldoyle Musical Society is delighted to announce that the show to be staged in April 2015 is

‘Sugar’, better known as the musical version of the classic movie

‘Some Like it Hot’.

Be prepared for a fast-paced, hilarious show featuring amazing dance numbers and great tunes. Long time member Paul Fay returns as director. Rehearsals will start in January.

The pantomime production currently in rehearsal is

‘Robin Hood’, which will be held on January 9, 10, 11 and 16, 17, 18 in 2015.

Bookings can now be made by visiting www.baldoylemusicalsociety.ie, emailing info@baldoylemusicalsociety.ie, or calling 087-1378329. Please note that groups are especially welcome and special discounts for group bookings apply.

Folks are reminded that in addition to performers Baldoyle would like to hear from people with aspirations in backstage crafts and administrative skills who are looking for a new social outlet.
