A FREE family afternoon of weaving and basketry heritage with Global Action Plan (GAP) Ireland is taking place in Ballymun on Saturday August 30.
The event is part of National Heritage Week, which runs from August 23-31, and it’s one of over 1,500 special events taking place nationwide.
GAP Ireland’s event is on Saturday, August 30, from 12pm to 3pm in the Virgin Mary Community Garden, Shangan Road, Ballymun.
The GAP Ireland team will present a talk and demonstration on the versatility and use of willow, cultivation and growing techniques and a child friendly willow-weaving workshop.
Speaking about the event, Eoin Craven, community gardener with GAP Ireland said:
“Heritage week is a great opportunity nationally, for individuals and families, to engage with the rich and fascinating heritage of our island.
“Willow weaving is a wonderful craft, where human ingenuity meets the plant world.
“Come along to the Virgin Mary garden and see an array of woven craft, learn of its history and give children an opportunity to experience it first hand, as well as take home a small woven project which they will make on the day.

During the event visitors will be encouraged to bring their own
‘rug and grub’ for a picnic, and take a stroll around the garden, soaking up all it has to offer from the pond and custom made bridge and benches, to the plastic bottle greenhouse and much more.
Light refreshments will be served on the day and the event is weather permitting.
The event is funded by Ballymun Regeneration Limited (BRL) and Dublin City Council (DCC)
