HUNDREDS of people took part in a re-enactment of the landing by the Irish Volunteers of Mauser rifles from the yacht Asgard on 26 July 1914, 100 years to the very day on the East Pier in Howth.
Organised by the local McLoughlin/Cahill Sinn Féin Cumann, the day saw an exhibition by the Irish Volunteers Commemorative Organisation in Howth Angling Centre, a re-enactment of the landing using replica Mauser rifles and a ceremony at the memorial on the East Pier.
Cllr Daire Nà Laoi (SF), who represents the Howth-Malahide Local Electoral Area (LEA) on Fingal County Council, chaired the event and her colleague, MÃcheál Mac Donncha, who represents the Beaumont-Donaghmede LEA on Dublin City Council, recounted the history of the Asgard landing.
Renowned local uilleann piper Leo Rickard played and Séamus McLoughlin, a veteran of the Howth committee which erected the memorial in 1964, laid the wreath.
The main oration was given by Sinn Féin South Dublin County Councillor Eoin � Broin.
