A LEAGUE formed on the Northside especially for senior golfers has received a sponsorship boost.
Donal MacNally Hearing, based at Sutton Shopping Centre, is to sponsor Fingal Seniors.
More than one thousand golfers, men and women, have competed in an inter-club competition for seniors over the past 12 years.
The league is for golfers, both men and women, of 60 years and over with a handicap of 19 or more, and is played from April to September each year.
The objective of Fingal Seniors (for both men and women) is to encourage golfers with high handicaps to represent their club in an inter-club competition.
For some of the golfers playing in the Fingal Seniors would have been the first time they had represented their club. Each year in both leagues new friendships are made and old ones renewed.
Audiologist and Director of Donal MacNally Hearing, Leona Kane, announcing the sponsorship, said:
“We are delighted to sponsor the Fingal Seniors, which encourages senior golfers to participate in healthy and friendly outdoor competition.

John Robinson, chairman of the Men’s Fingal Seniors, thanked Leona for the sponsorship and said:
“It was a significant and encouraging boost for the Seniors.

The league for men started in 2003 at the instigation of The Island Golf and the ladies’ league started at Turvey Golf Club in 2007.
Balcarrick, Beaverstown, Corrstown, Donabate, Howth, The Island and Turvey (sadly now closed) were the clubs who played in the first men’s competition. It now has an additional nine clubs: Ashbourne, Balbriggan, Clontarf, Forrest Little, Hollywood Lakes, Hollystown, Sutton, St Anne’s and Westmanstown.
The clubs currently playing in the Ladies’ Fingal Seniors are Balbriggan, Balcarrick, Beaverstown, Clontarf, Donabate, Forrest Little, Howth, Malahide, St Anne’s, Skerries and The Island.
Every September the men hold a Gala Day, which this year will be held at Hollystown Golf Club. It is a single stableford competition and also a team event.
At the Gala Day the participating clubs also play for the perpetual Liam Dockrell Memorial Trophy. Liam, after whom the trophy is named, was The Island Golf Club member who came up with the idea to form the Fingal Seniors and with a few others began the league which continues to grow in popularity.
