A LOCAL student was celebrating recently after winning an award at an event held in UCD.

Katie Culligan (17), from Dominican College, Drumcondra, was recognised as the Best Individual Student at the 2014 BT Young Scientist Business Bootcamp.

The aim of the bootcamp, delivered in partnership with UCD, is to bridge the gap between education and business for students who demonstrate entrepreneurial flair and business acumen.

Now in its fifth year, the four-day innovation and skills camp, held at NovaUCD, involved 29 second-level students from across Ireland who demonstrated an ability to understand how and why a simple idea can be developed into a commercially viable enterprise.

The participating students were selected in January from over 1,200 secondary school students who competed in the 2014 BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.

Shay Walsh, managing director of Business, BT Ireland, congratulated all the participants at the awards ceremony,

“It’s our fifth year delivering the BT Bootcamp at UCD and as a judge I was once again hugely impressed with the entrepreneurial skills the students have displayed this week,

? said Mr Walsh.

“I hope that our 29 participants will be returning home with an entirely new set of skills enabling them to take their idea out of the classroom and transform it into a viable business venture in the future.

“On behalf of BT, I would like to congratulate our winners and indeed everyone who has taken part.
