Anger over late night bin collections

Cllr John Redmond says he received calls about late night waste collections

TEETHING problems with the introduction of new designated waste collection days are being blamed on late night bin lorries in a number of Northside estates last week.

Several residents complained that lorries were collecting waste from as late as 9.30pm and into the early hours of the morning in a number of areas in Finglas.

Local councillor, John Redmond (Lab), said he received dozens of calls and messages from residents, some with young children, who had been disturbed by the late night binmen.

“It is not acceptable to have children woken from their beds at 1.30am,

? he said.

“It was also brought to my attention that emptied bins were left in the middle of the road.

Greyhound Household, whose lorries were spotted making late night collections in Finglas, apologised for any inconvenience caused and said crews were adjusting to the new bye-laws.

“On March 3 the new Dublin bye-laws came into force in relation to waste collection,

? a company spokesperson said.

“The main change is the designated collection day where every area of the city has household bins collected on the same day, no matter which waste collection company the customer uses.

“Greyhound Household welcomes this change as it will lessen the traffic impact on the city and make collections more straightforward for customers.

“However, as the changes involved tens of thousands of households, some collection crews worked late on the changeover day to ensure continuity of service. Greyhound apologies for any inconvenience caused to customers.

Greyhound’s CEO, Michael Buckley added:

“As Ireland’s largest household waste collection company, Greyhound is well equipped to minimise the impact of the change-over on customers.

“We are confident that the collection times will level out over the coming weeks.

According to the new bye-laws the hours collections can be made on most designated collection days are between 6am and 9pm.
