The relocation began on Monday, February 10, and the first elective surgery was due to take place in the new building this week on Monday, February 24.

Workers have spent the last two weeks moving and constructing theatres, intensive care units and the National Spinal Injuries Units into the building where heart and lung transplants will also be taking place.

Remaining wards in the original Mater Misericordiae Wing will also be moving to the Mater Whitty Wing in the building, which will house 12 new operating theatres, 120 one-bed en suite rooms, new emergency and outpatients departments and a modern radiology department.

“This final migration of departments to the Mater Whitty Wing creates a perfect environment for the delivery of world class care to our patients under the expertise of the most dedicated and professional medical team,

? said Mater Hospital CEO Mary Day.

“The experience of our patients will be enhanced significantly through the provision of these state-of-art facilities.

“This significant milestone in the long and illustrious history of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital and Sisters of Mercy’s dedication to serving the community, will ensure the hospital continues to enhance its national reputation for high quality care.

Most of the hospital’s critically ill patients have now been relocated to modern facilities in the new building.

Members of the public were asked not to visit or attend the hospital unless absolutely necessary while work was being carried out.

The Mater Campus Hospital Development started in 2000 and involved the rebuilding of parts of Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.

Minister for Health, James Reilly, announced the phased opening of the development In April 2012. The Phase One opening provided for outpatient and catering facilities.

Phase Two in early 2013 provided emergency and radiology facilities and later that year a new haematology and oncology ward with 100 per cent single room provision opened.
