The Irish Cancer Society launched their annual Trek4 Life appeal last week and they are asking the people of Dublin to make 2014 a year to remember by taking part in their exciting new treks.

Participants will not only have the chance to see the world with a group of like-minded people but will also be given the opportunity to raise vital money for cancer research.

One of this year’s thrilling new treks is taking place in the shadow of the mighty Daula Dhar, a five-day trek in the Indian Himalayas.

The perfect opportunity to experience the unique culture and tradition of the high Himalaya, Little Tibet offers a trek through the home of many thousands of Tibetan refugees, amongst them His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

From snow-capped peaks to patchwork green village fields this challenge takes you through villages, forests, crossing rivers and streams.

Another new trek is to one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World, the Grand Canyon in the USA.

Created by the Colorado River over a six million year period, the awe-inspiring Canyon stretches for an unbelievable 277 miles showcasing unbelievable depths of colourful geology.

The charity also returns to the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro, a dormant volcano mountain in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro is not only the highest mountain in Africa, but it is also the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

A worldwide magnet for adventurers, walkers and climbers the world over, this mountain top trek is a once in a life time opportunity not to be missed.

Taking the beautiful Machame route through tropical rain forest all the way up to the mighty snow-capped Uhuru Peak 5,896m above sea level, you are guaranteed some of the most breath-taking and unbelievable views across Africa.

A challenging but rewarding trek this is sure to make 2014 a year you will never forget.

Professor John Fitzpatrick, Head of Research, Irish Cancer Society said:

“Taking on a trek for the Irish Cancer Society is not only a massive personal challenge but it is also a chance for the community to join us in the fight against cancer.

“Trek4Life is a fantastic opportunity to take part in a unique experience while raising vital funds for cancer research.

He added:

“Because of research into better treatments more and more of those diagnosed with cancer will be restored to full health and that is thanks to funding from programmes such as Trek4Life.

The Irish Cancer Society has contributed more than e30 million to cancer research since 1963 and is the largest voluntary body funding cancer research in Ireland.

Over the past 30 years, more than 650 important research findings have been discovered which has led to major advances in cancer research.
