Ballymun taxi rank to be made official

DUBLIN City Council has confirmed they will seek to make a

‘temporary’ taxi rank that has been operating in Ballymun official later this year.

The official Ballymun taxi rank was previously situated at the old swimming pool. However this has become inconvenient for drivers and passengers following changes made during the regeneration.

In recent times taxis have unofficially being using a slip road beside the old filling station on Sillogue Road as a rank as it’s closer to where many locals would want to hire a cab.

Council officials outlined their plans in response to a question from Councillor Hugh McGarr (Lab) at a recent area committee meeting.

“The current taxi rank bye-laws contain a provision for a taxi rank adjacent to the former swimming pool location, opposite to where the current ad-hoc rank is in operation,

? the council’s reply said.

“These bye-laws are soon to be reviewed.

“It is proposed to replace the above rank with a new rank on the slip road which formed part of the former filling station on Sillogue Road. This is currently being used without approval and should be formalised.

The move has been welcomed by Dublin North West TD, John Lyons (Lab).

“With the many changes in Ballymun, the taxi rank beside the old swimming pool was not suitable so taxi drivers have been operating an

‘ad hoc’ rank on the slip road to the old filling station on Sillogue Road,

? he said.

“To add any new taxi ranks, the council has to change the bye-laws and must start a public consultation beforehand. This is due to happen the spring and it will consider all of the taxi ranks in the Dublin area.

“I know there is a lot of uncertainty for drivers in the city about taxi ranks during the construction of Luas Cross City and what will happen during and after the works begin.

“I believe taxi drivers should be consulted fully during the Council’s consultation period and I would encourage drivers to submit their concerns when it opens up soon.
