A NORTHSIDE student, who played for the Irish wheelchair football team at the World Championships in Paris last summer, provided his classmates with an exhibition of his skills at his college’s Christmas party.
Josh Dillon’s participation on the Irish team was a source of great pride to everyone at the Donahies Community School.
As part of the party for first years, Josh, his Dad Paul and PE teacher Mr Coombes organised for his classmates and teaching staff to experience the game, and a memorable morning was spent in the sports hall.
Despite the best efforts of everyone it was clear why Josh is the world champion as he gave an awesome display of his skills.
Like all sports the skill levels only improve with practice and everyone was left in no doubt that wheelchair football is a seriously tough game requiring dedication and effort. All of his classmates and the teachers thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.
At the end of the exhibition Josh and his Dad presented his Ireland jersey to the school.
Mr Keohane, vice principal at the Donahies, accepted the jersey on behalf of the school and told Josh of the honour he had brought to the Donahies by representing his country at the pinnacle of his sport.
The jersey will be framed and displayed in a prominent location where Josh’s exploits will always be remembered.
Dave McGrath, from the Irish Wheelchair Association, provided the wheelchairs for the event.
Meanwhile, Josh has also learned that he has been picked to play on the Senior Irish team for the European Championships which will be held in Limerick in June, and all at the Donahies Community School wish him continued success.
