THE Tánaiste, and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore was on home ground recently when he launched UNICEF Ireland’s
‘It’s About Us’ campaign at Newpark Comprehensive School in Blackrock.
The new campaign comprises a series of classroom workshops for schools that are designed to stimulate discussion between young people on the world’s foremost development challenges.
The launch was hosted by students of Newpark Comprehensive School, who provided feedback on their views and actions from the workshops.
“I am delighted to be here among the students of Newpark for the national launch of UNICEF Ireland’s
‘It’s About Us campaign,
? Deputy Gilmore said, before thanking the principal, Derek Lowry, staff and students for their warm welcome.
“The workshops designed by UNICEF are very much in line with the focus on development education that is found in our new policy on international development One World, One Future, as delivered by Irish Aid,
? he explained.
“The Irish Aid programme aims to tackle the root causes of poverty and injustice in the developing world, and understanding those root causes and encouraging people to take action are critical if we are to achieve our objective to eliminate global poverty and hunger.
“It is vital that students are given the opportunity to learn about and to evaluate international development issues. At a time when economic challenges are centre stage worldwide, it is more critical than ever to increase understanding and awareness of global justice issues.
?
He added:
“I have listened closely to those of you who spoke so eloquently and passionately about your views. I hope that your active engagement and learning on these issues will continue as you finish these workshops, and will lead you to effect positive change as global citizens.
