TALENTED locals in Ballymun have helped create an environmentally friendly calendar featuring photos of ponds, puddles, local green spaces, bugs and wildlife from the area.

The calendar features 16 super photos selected from over 100 entries from local schools, youth groups and independent amateur photographers to the annual

‘Ballymun Framed’ calendar competition organised by Global Action Plan (GAP) Ireland.

The winning photographers were recognised for the efforts at a special awards ceremony held in the Civic Offices, Ballymun on December 11.

This year the theme of the calendar was inspired by the decision by the United Nations to declare 2013 as International Year of Water Cooperation.

Vanessa Moore, CEO of GAP Ireland said:

“The calendar competition is a great initiative through which to raise awareness of the UN Year of Water Cooperation and it also encourages young adults in Ballymun to explore environmental issues and increase civic pride in their local area.

To mark the Year of Water Cooperation children and young people in Ballymun, were encouraged to send in photos connected to the theme throughout 2013. GAP Ireland said the standard of entries was remarkable and that it gave young people the opportunity to express themselves in a creative and exciting way as well as to take ownership of their local green spaces.

“Working alongside schools and communities to create the 2014 calendar has been inspirational,

? said, GAP Ireland Education Officer, Sophie Nicol.

“Young people in Ballymun are very closely engaged with green issues and community projects, and this has been shown year after year with our photo competition.

The top three winners announced at last week’s awards ceremony were Peader Lewis, (17), The Afterschool Club (Glor na nGael) and Our Lady of Victories Senior Infants class. Each received a digital camera for their work.

GAP Ireland’s calendar competition is funded by Ballymun Regeneration Limited (BRL)
