A SOCCER tournament dedicated to the memory of a Northside father-of-three who took his own life almost three years ago is taking place this weekend.
Andy Morgan from Santry died on New Year’s Eve 2010 and since then family and friends have worked tirelessly fundraising to support charities dedicated to suicide prevention and mental health awareness.
The first event created by what has become the Andy Morgan Foundation was a five-a-side soccer tournament and it was so successful it is now an annual event.
The year 16 local teams will be battling it out for the Andy Morgan five-a-side Perpetual Cup from 11am-4pm on Saturday, December 14 at DCU Sports Ground on Ballymun Road.
Trophy presentations will take place later that night at 7pm in Matt Weldon’s pub (formally the Slipper). There will be lots of food and entertainment until late.
Spokesperson for the Andy Morgan Foundation, Pat Daly, said family and friends were delighted with the support shown for the soccer tournament.
“On behalf of all of us at the Andy Morgan Foundation I’d like to thank all our sponsors including Macron Sports, Matt Weldon’s Pub, DCU Sports and all the local businesses in the area who contributed spot prizes for the raffle on the night,
? he said.
“We would also like to thank all those who have publicised the event and also the referees and players who will take part on the day. There are still a couple of places for teams, so if anyone is reading this and think they have what it takes to win this prestige cup please contact Pat Daly on 087-6202945 or Liam Clinton on 087-2775197.
