Supply crisis fuels anger over water charges

The water supply restrictions in Dublin have increased public unhappiness about the prospect of charges coming down the line in the near future. Here’s an edited selection of some of the comments we received on the Dublin People Facebook page.

Aishling Flynn:

And they want to charge us for water – a flippin’ joke!

Geraldine Curtin:

I think it’s disgraceful. Again I get home from work it’s off and it’s still off when I am going to work.

Rachel Harris:

It’s an absolute joke. First they cut the water off then yesterday morning, without any notice, they started to put in the water meter. Since then I have not had clear running water. I have a small baby for whom I need clean water for the bottles. So now I have to go and buy bottled water. I know it’s not that expensive but it’s still leaving me out of pocket.

Paddy Mann:

Is it 2013 or 1913? Water shortages. Ireland is joke of the world

Theresa Lawlor:

Water hasn’t been cut off in Artane yet. So the three big pots of water I’ve filled to keep on standby are now wasted. Of course, I’ll use them to flush the loo but do you get my drift?

Frances Conlon Kinsella:

You’d want to see the scale in my kettle and showerhead from the water where I live – and they want me to pay for it!

Nikki Gallagher:

If I’m paying for water I want it available 24 hours a day, seven days a week! No shortages.

Eileen Byrne:

Another charge on already hard-pressed people who are trying to get by as it is.

Frances Mansfield:

Think it is money down the drain. What I don’t understand is that countries that have sunshine practically every day of the year never run out of water, while Ireland – which has practically non stop rain – always runs out of water when we have a spell of dry weather.

Margaret Cunningham:

Water is being wasted through leaking pipes. We should not pay until the system is renewed.

Bernice O’Leary:

Anytime there is too much rain on my road it is like a river flowing – and all the pipes leaking. What a joke this country we live in is. About time we stood up to this crap once and for all.

Jonathan Byrne:

Their excuse in the summer is hose use and lack of rainfall. What’s their excuse this time? If they can’t run the system they shouldn’t start charging for it in the first place.
