IT’S official. Northsiders are better at managing their waste than those living South of the River Liffey.
A study of recycling rates across nine different Dublin postcodes carried out by waste management company, Greyhound, confirmed that the Northside of the city has the better recycling track record.
The study showed that the three best areas for both green and brown bin usage were on the Northside.
And the worst performing area for green bin recycling was Dublin 4, at 23.7 pre cent, against an average of 27 per cent. The worst performing area for brown bin recycling was Dublin 8 at 13.3 pre cent compared to an average of 18 per cent.
Commenting on the study Greyhound Chief Executive Michael Buckley said:
“It’s extremely interesting to see the differences in the recycling rates right across Dublin with Dollymount and Ballybough out-performing Donnybrook and Ballsbridge.
“Let’s hope a bit of traditional Dublin rivalry will see postcodes South of the Liffey doing better when we repeat this study in three months time.

As a nation, Ireland is under pressure to meet waste targets set under the EU Waste Framework Directive. And the country needs to do more to ensure those targets are met.
“Greyhound encourages customers to make full use of the services the company provides, and use their brown bins to maximum capacity, thereby saving money on waste management costs,
? Buckley added.
When it came to green bin collections, top of list was Dublin 3, followed by Dublin 1, Dublin 9, Dublin 5 and Dublin 2. The best for brown bin collection was Dublin 5 followed by Dublin 3, Dublin 9, Dublin 4 and Dublin 6.
Greyhound’s report was compiled after measuring the weight of waste collected from bins across the Dublin City Council and South Dublin County Council areas, which it services.
The percentage of total weight accounted for by green and brown waste was then calculated. Green bins are used to collect materials like paper, cans and plastics for recycling, whereas brown bins are for bio-waste like food and grass cuttings.
“As a company, Greyhound is proud of the fact that in excess of 90 per cent of the waste we collect across the three bin waste-stream is recycled or recovered, and we encourage our customers to help us and help themselves by trying to sort their rubbish into the correct bin,
? Buckley continued.
“This in turn, will help maximise the amount of material that can be recycled and recovered.

Greyhound is the largest household waste collector in Ireland providing waste management services to over half a million customers nationwide, and emptying over 20,000 bins per day.
