THE countdown is on for a race with a difference which is taking place in Dublin next month.
This year’s Remembrance Run 5K will be held in the Phoenix Park on Sunday, November 10.
It’s a day when hundreds of people can walk, jog or run five kilometres and remember family or friends passed or some who may be currently struggling with illness or other life challenges.
This year’s event will again be organised by Athletics Ireland in association with www.mycharity.ie Participants will be encouraged to adopt a favourite charity to fundraise for.
A target of
?¬200,000 has been set, to be raised for various charities through the event – based on each of the expected 2,000 entrants raising
?¬100 each. Participants can choose from close to 500 charities on the www.mycharity.ie website.
Frank Greally, editor of Irish Runner magazine, said:
“Remembrance Run gives people an opportunity to celebrate their own gift of days and fullness of health – and also a chance to pause and remember others dear to them on a November day in the lovely Phoenix Park.
?
Mr Greally said they want to make it another very special day for everyone.
“We are already getting a lot of group entries; people who are joining with work colleagues to remember someone special to them,
? he added.
“This event casts a very wide net and you only have to watch the people lining up to write on our special Wall of Remembrance on race day to understand what taking part in the event means to them.
?
This year’s Remembrance Run will also include a special tribute to Noel Carroll – the original Irish running guru – who died suddenly 15 years ago this month.
Noel played a pivotal role in bringing the first Dublin Marathon to the streets of the capital and it is a tribute to his memory that this year’s Airtricity Dublin Marathon looks set to break all records, with over 15,000 entries expected.
Another Irish Runner contributor, Con Houlihan, the legendary sports journalist, will also have a Remembrance Run trophy dedicated to his memory.
The theme song will again be Luke Kelly’s wonderful interpretation of
‘Thank You For The Days’ and the event will also feature special theme music and poetry readings prior to the start.
Online entry for Remembrance Run is now open at www.remembrancerun.ie
