Festival treat for history buffs

HISTORY BUFFS: Lord Mayor Oisín Quinn and City Librarian Margaret Hayes at the launch of the Dublin Festival of History

LIBERATORS, lockouts and laundries are all part of the inaugural Dublin Festival of History, which kicks-off next week.

Ireland’s shared heritage with Britain, the 1913 Dublin Lockout, the Magdalene Laundries, the Great Famine and Daniel O’Connell are just some of the fascinating topics that will be discussed by a panel of Irish and international historians during the festival.

Organised by Dublin City Council’s Public Libraries, it’s the city’s first ever city-wide history festival and a stellar cast of Irish and international historians will be taking park.

Diarmuid Ferriter, Roy Hattersley, Simon Schama, Richard Overy and Jung Chang will all be discussing important events that have helped shape the city.

Historical walking tours, a local history day and a special historical fiction creative writing course with Katherine McMahon are also part of the programme.

The headline events take place at The Printworks Venue in Dublin Castle between September 26-29. Other events continue at public libraries and other venues around Dublin City from September 26 to October 9.

Dublin City Librarian, Margaret Hayes said:

“Interest in history is increasingly reflected in library loans, in attendances at historical programmes and in the uptake of local studies courses provided.

“Last year over 70,000 history titles were issued across all Dublin City branch libraries in various formats.
