A CHARITY event, held in memory of a Northside woman, has so far raised e13,000.

The second

‘Give it SOCKS Cycle’ in memory of Portmarnock woman Frances Tobin took place on August 31.

Over 120 cyclists – an increase from 70 in 2012 – took part in the 140km challenge from Three Mile House, County Monaghan to Portmarnock.

The cyclists passed through Carrickmacross, Ardee, Collon, Drogheda, Balbriggan and Malahide. Supporting Ovarian Cancer Knowledge (SOCK) information leaflets highlighting the symptoms of ovarian cancer were handed out on the day.

The cycle was organised by the Tobin family in memory of their late mother Frances who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2011. All the money raised from the cycle will go towards SOCK.

Funds raised from last year’s cycle contributed to SOCK’S awareness campaign which has seen almost 100,000 ovarian cancer information leaflets distributed via GP surgeries and various events over the past 12 months.

In addition, SOCK is part funding a Research Co-Ordinator post in the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit in Waterford Regional Hospital. This will enable research into ovarian cancer and assist in the roll out of medical trials to ovarian cancer patients.

Funds raised from the 2013

‘Give it SOCKS Cycle’ will help SOCK to continue their awareness campaign and assist in the funding of ovarian cancer research in Ireland.
