Kilbride celebrate Memorial Cup triumph

GIRL POWER: The Kilbride Hotties celebrate after winning the Karl Coyne Memorial Cup.

FRAN Reilly scored a hat-trick for Kilbride in their 4-2 victory over Pinebrook in the annual battle for the Tommy Coakley and Michael Thompson Memorial Cup.

Mark Ludlow opened the scoring for the victors with a neat finish after 15 minutes. Karl O’Sullivan equalised from the penalty spot after 25 minutes.

Kilbride restored their advantage before half time when Reilly scored his first from outside the penalty area.

In the second half, Reilly extended Kilbride’s lead with his second after some good work from Collie Flynn. And with 15 minutes to go he coolly finished from inside the 18-yard box to wrap up his hat-trick. Paul Thompson scored a late consolation goal for Pinebrook.

Cathal O’Donoghue made some great saves for Kilbride in an entertaining game. Reilly duly took the Ronnie Hughes Man of the Match award.

Meanwhile, the lads didn’t have it all their own way as the Karl Coyne Memorial Cup was contested between two girls’ teams – Kilbride Hotties and Pinebrook Divas.

This was only the second year that the girls’ match was played and attracted a big crowd prior to the men’s game.

The Kilbride Hotties, captained by Deirdre Burton Coyne, came out on top in an exciting encounter that ended 3-2.

Tammie Murphy scored the winner with a quality strike from 30 yards.

The Divas, captained by Sarah Groarke, were unlucky not to get a late equaliser.

Kilbride owe their success to some super performances by their young guns – Rachel Slater and Kellie Adams.

Aimee Clarke won the Ronnie Hughes Player of the Match award for her heroics in the Kilbride goal.

Six-year-old Sean

‘Gareth Bale’ Coakley won the Kids’ Penalty Shootout competition.

St Francis Hospice and St Michael’s House will benefit from the two charity matches that took place at Killester Sports and Social Club.

The event has grown in popularity with locals since it was founded five years ago.

Tommy Coakley and Paul Thompson would like to say a big thank you to all involved on the day.
