Who would you choose as Lord Mayor?

FIT FOR THE MANSION HOUSE? Brendan O'Carroll, David Norris and Christy Dignam

Dubliners will decide next year whether or not they want a directly elected Lord Mayor. We asked our Facebook friends who they’d like to see take up residence in the Mansion House if they had a choice? Here’s an edited selection of the comments we received.

Sue Butler: David Norris. Never made President but could imagine him as Lord Mayor.

Brian Kearns: Christy Dignam, a man who has been through it all

Pat Gannon: John Lonergan, former Governor of Mountjoy.

Anto McGlynn: Críona Ní Dhálaigh of Sinn Fein, a very hard working woman working for the people of Dublin 8. And that’s not just me saying it – FF/FG/Lab say it too.

Marian Morrissey: Christy Dignam or Brendan O’Carroll. Two of the best Dubs and they have both done so much.

Suzanne Farrell: Damien Dempsey.

Anton Core: Fr Peter McVerry.

Mag Sloan: Mayor Imelda May – she would be great.

Denise Noonan: The homeless – they need a roof over their heads.

Ambrose O Shea: I would like to see Sean Gallagher get it for five years.

Sandy Droney: Joe Duffy – he’d sort them all out!

Paula Kenny: I think Mannix Flynn would be a good choice.

Sandra Devlin Ellis: Gay Byrne – I think he would be great.

Lyndsey Doran: Hector.

Caro Carolina: For heaven’s sake, no. This country is broke enough already without forcing taxpayers to pay for the enormous salary of yet another pointless figurehead.

Amy Bennett: I kind of like having a Mayor, to be honest. I mean, who else could you put in the middle of our fair city?

Carol Todd Barry: Senator David Norris.

Anne-Marie Dolan: Brendan Gleeson, Joe Duffy, Tommy Tiernan, Keith Duffy, Will Hanafin, Mary Coughlan (the singer) or Jennifer Maguire.

John Lee: Denis O’Brien would make a great Mayor of Dublin.

Ciaran Harris: Christy Dignam, hands down.

David Blacoe: Shane MacGowan

Karl J Hanna: If he was still alive, the late Tony Gregory or the Garda chief who brought down John Gilligan’s drug empire.

Frances Mansfield: It would have to be someone who has the city close to their heart and cared about it; not belonging to a political party and not in it for the money. Going to take a while to find someone like that.

Aoiffe NíhÁscín UíhÁodhá: I’d pick David Norris – he’s a proper Dublin gentleman.

Claire McGrath: Mayor Nidge.

Irene A Molloy: Christy Dignam, for deffo.

Paul Lennox: Fill it with the homeless.

Nelly Doyle: Why have a Lord Mayor in any town or city? Just another money grab
