FAMOUS League of Ireland footballers from yesteryear converged on Skerries Golf Club recently where they displayed their skills with the much smaller ball.
The Irish Footballers’ Golf Society, which has been running for over 40 years, comprises a number of former greats who graced the likes of Dalymount Park and Milltown in the days of the lace ball and big attendances on Sunday afternoons.
The overall winner of Dominic Halpin’s President’s Prize was Alf Girvin, formerly of Drumcondra.
Dominic, a member of Skerries Golf Club, said he was delighted with the huge turnout for his event.
The right half was a member of the Drumcondra team that won the League of Ireland in the 1957/58 season.
“It was my first season in the first team and to win the league was great,
? he said.
“I had been captain of the
‘Drums’ Youth team before I got called up to the first team.
?
Dominic, who also won a Youth cap for Ireland against West Germany, played in a celebrated
‘Drums’ team that included the likes of Bunny Fullam, Alan Kelly senior (goalkeeper),
‘Kit’ Lawlor and Tommy Rowe.
