DUBLIN’S Lord Mayor, Oisín Quinn, was not afraid to get his feet wet at the launch of the 94th Liffey Swim last week.

The mayor was first in the water as details were released of the historic event that will take place this year on Saturday, August 24.

The Lord Mayor was joined by a number of Liffey swimmers for this year’s launch that was organised by Dublin City Council and the Open Sea Committee.

The race will commence at 12.30pm with the Lord Mayor firing the starting gun for the men’s race. The ladies will then jump right in at 1.30pm.

“I am delighted to be part of the launch for the 94th Liffey Swim,

? the Lord Mayor said.

“I am extremely passionate about sporting events taking place in the city and the historic Liffey Swim is one such event that has continued through the years and is still seen as one of Dublin’s greatest sporting legacies.

He added:

“This race has given generations of people across Ireland and beyond so much joy over its 93-year history.

“We hope that as many people as possible come along to the quays to cheer on the swimmers as they make their way through the historic lifeline of Dublin City, the River Liffey.

Paul Clegg, Executive Manager for Dublin City Council, said they were hoping everyone is marking August 24 into their diary.

“Dublin has a well-deserved reputation as a unique and welcoming city,

? he said.

“We are proud to support and produce free sporting and cultural events such as the Liffey Swim in the city each year that will further foster this reputation.

Due to the development of the new Luas bridge, this year’s race will start at the Loop Line Bridge beside Butt Bridge and finish at the pontoon on the Northside of the river beside the East Link Toll Bridge in front of the O2.

At approximately 1,600 metres in length the Liffey Swim attracts over 300 entrants each year who all qualify through the Leinster Open Sea Races for a unique chance of swimming the Liffey.
