DUBLINERS who love to run are urged to join in the fun on August 5 when Ireland’s newest road race, the Rock n Roll Half Marathon, takes place in the capital.

Over 2,000 international participants will be joining around 6,000 entrants from around Ireland for what could be one of the largest official Gatherings in the country.

And organisers are hoping for a huge turnout from the people of Dublin.

Minister of State for Tourism & Sport, Michael Ring, who launched the event recently, has called on Dubliners to get involved.

“This will be a great event for runners and spectators and a super new visitor attraction for the capital,

? the minister said.

“Ireland has some world-famous summer festivals, but events which combine live music and a charity element are even more attractive.

“At this early stage more than 2,000 people have signed up from the US, UK, Canada and Europe for the race and we look forward to welcoming them all to Ireland in August.

The event is sponsored by The Loop at Dublin Airport and Fáilte Ireland.

The half marathon will feature live bands playing at every mile on the route while The Delorentos will be performing as the headline act for the finish line festival.

“This is a unique marathon event that marries music with sport and we hope that people will travel from every country in Ireland to take part or simply enjoy the family fun and free live music,

? Minister Ring added.

Siobhan Moore of The Loop is throwing her support behind the event by signing up to participate in the 21km race and is currently in training.

“Dublin Airport and The Loop are expecting over several thousand additional passengers, plus their friends and families over the August Bank Holiday weekend, so it will be an extra busy time for us, which is very exciting as there will be a great buzz through the airport,

? she said.

“This is The Loop’s first-ever sporting sponsorship and what better way to show our support than to take part and raise funds?

She added.

“Ireland’s airports are the principal gateways to The Gathering in Ireland this year and Rock

‘n’ Roll is a great event in which we are getting directly involved, with thousands of others, raising money and having some fun.

The Rock

‘n’ Roll Half Marathon will also be for a good cause as funds will go to the international SeriousFun Children’s Network and Ireland’s Barretstown, which were both founded by the actor Paul Newman.

The run starts at 8.30am on Bank Holiday Monday, August and full details and registration can be viewed at www.rocknrolldublin.com.
