TWO teams from a Blackrock-based food services company played a competitive football match for a staggering 53 hours non-stop recently to set a new world record.
The players from Sodexo Ireland kicked the game off at 10.05am on Friday, June 21 and continued to the final whistle at 3.05pm on Sunday, June 23.
And a score line? A whopping 695 to 601!
Organisers Owen Keating, Andrew McGinley and Dermot Moloney from Sodexo Ireland are hoping that their teams’ efforts will net a final total of e20,000 to be split between Barnardos, the Irish Cancer Society and St Vincent de Paul, the three Irish charities supported under Sodexo’s Stop Hunger Campaign.
Andrew McGinley said they were exhausted but delighted and elated after their mammoth efforts.
“A huge vote of thanks, not only to the two teams who put in so much effort over the weekend, but also to the overwhelming support from work colleagues who travelled from all over the country to lend a hand and support us,
? he said.
“If we hit our fundraising target of
?¬20,000, it will be a really great outcome for the many months of preparation that went into organising the event.
?
They now plan to submit the record to the Guinness World Records for official verification.
Owen Keating explained:
“The current record is 43 hours but the unofficial world record is 52 hours so, if Sodexo Ireland’s time is verified, it will unite the two records which will be a great achievement.
?
Margot Slattery, the managing director of Sodexo Ireland, also attended the event to support the teams.
“We are very proud of their achievement,
? she said.
“On behalf of the company, my sincere thanks to all the staff volunteers, family and friends who supported the players during the past few months and over the weekend in this extremely gruelling challenge for three very worthwhile charities.
