THE last 17 names have been drawn for the new bridge spanning the Liffey.
Dublin City Council said there was an enthusiastic response to the advertisement seeking nominations for the naming of the new bridge at Marlborough Street.
There were 85 official nominations received along with almost 10,000 supporting submissions, including emails, direct correspondence and petitions.
At the meeting of Dublin City Council’s Commemorative Naming Committee the 85 nominations were shortlisted to 17.
The shortlisted names will be reviewed at the next meeting of the committee on June 3.
“This process has assisted in bringing to public attention people and events that have made a unique and outstanding contribution to the life and history of Dublin,
? said Cllr Dermot Lacey (Lab), chairman.
“It has brought into focus a rich variety of names, many of which will give the city council suggestions for the naming of infrastructure into the future.

The new bridge is scheduled to be completed in late 2013.
Some of the shortlisted names include the Abbey Theatre Bridge; the Bermingham, Willie; the Connolly, James, the Duff, Frank and the Gregory, Lady.
