With Xtra-vision in receivership and a number of its stores set to close, we asked our Facebook friends when they last rented a DVD. And if they don’t, what do they do for their in-house movie entertainment these days? Here’s an edited selection of the comments we received.
Lynn McDonald: We rent them from UPC on demand as Xtra-vision isn’t walking distance. Delivery service would have made all the difference, increased turnover and employed extra staff.
Jo-Anne Dunne: Rented last weekend from Xtra-vision. Love their stores. Will be very disappointed if our one closes. Can’t use the entertainment sites like Netflix as our internet service here is so bad.
Georgina Moore: Movies on hard drive, not DVDs. Why go out and rent when you can get films from the comfort of your own sofa? DVDs are gone out. Sorry to hear about all the Xtra-visions closing down all the same. It’s not nice for people to be out of work.
Joeleen Ni Bhrolchain: Haven’t used my account in about two years. Use iTunes to rent and also have Netflix.
Louise Hennessey: The other day. Hope our one doesn’t close down.
Gen Costello: We rent from them most weekends.
Joe McDermott: I’m surprised they lasted this long. Hard copy movie rental industry is completely dead since the birth of high-speed broadband. As old people die, the newspaper industry will die with them. It may take a while but eventually the likes of bookstores will also disappear.
Lavinnia Reilly: Rented DVDs last Saturday.
Eileen Cusack: Last weekend, from Xtra-vision in Ongar. Very disappointing it’s closing – the staff there are so lovely.
Hella Toolin: They closed in Rush well over a year ago so I haven’t been renting since. Our library has lots of films to rent and we get them from there every week.
Claire Coffey Kennedy: I get a couple of movies every weekend coz Sky just repeat, repeat, repeat. Hope my one doesn’t close.
Susan Ni Cleirigh: Last weekend –
‘Jack Reacher’.
Niamh MacFarlane: The stores to close in the Republic are Tallaght, Rathmines, Baggot Street, Swords, Ongar, Sandymount, Phibsborough, Carpenterstown and Roscrea, affecting 54 jobs. Only dropped a DVD back yesterday. I love my local Xtra-vision. The staff and managers are lovely and are the reason I go back.
Alan Bird: Last Saturday in Ashbourne. We rent very frequently and they do great multiple kids’ DVD deals. Their nachos and cheese are top notch!
Miranda Shiels: We use Netflix but it’s good to have Xtra-vision.
Glyn Dolan: A few months ago.
Kate O’Meara: I rent films all the time. I’d hate for it to close down.
Jane Gumble: A year ago. Lower your prices and I would rent every week or two. New releases are too expensive for me.
Lisa Plowman: Not rented a movie in three or four years. Watch them off the hard drive or on Netflix now. The price to rent is just crazy.
Mary Carroll: A few years ago. Watch all our movies on hard drive.
Danielle Doyle: A few weeks ago. Won’t be able to anymore because they are closing the Swords store.
