A NEW child and adolescent service has been launched at the Village Counselling Service, in Killinarden Enterprise Park, Tallaght.
The aim of the new service is to offer counselling and support to children and adolescents in the Tallaght and greater Dublin area.
Last year, the Village Counselling Service (VCS) saw 133 children and expects the number to grow further in 2013.
Speaking at the launch, Marcella Finnerty, chairperson of the Village Counselling Service, said:
“The launch of the new child and adolescent service is a major step in ensuring that children have access to psychological support in an immediate manner within their community.
“We believe that our new service is an important tool in primary care and mental health prevention and intervention that can lead to better lives for children, teenagers and their families.
“In hosting an official launch of our service, we are hoping to spread the word right across the community in Tallaght, and Dublin, that there is a professional counselling service available for children and young people which is not exclusive or costly.

The VCS child and adolescent counselling service helps the young person to cope with stresses such as family break up, bullying, relationships and bereavement.
In addition it helps children to deal with traumatic events and psychological difficulties including anxiety and depression and to specifically address these issues in ways that are acceptable to the young person.
The VCS also uses an integrative model of child therapy that helps children understand painful and upsetting feelings.
As play is a child’s natural form of expression, it is incorporated into therapy to help them communicate at their level.
This model of counselling allows the child to release needs, fears and wishes and can help with emotional and behavioral difficulties.
Minister Frances Fitzgerald, who helped launch the service, said:
“I am delighted that this child and adolescent counselling service is now available.
“The provision of good quality mental health care for young people has been a key priority for me and I have no doubt that this service will make a crucial difference to thousands of families.
“I want to commend the fantastic staff and volunteers that make this service possible. The time and expertise volunteered means that there is an accessible and professional service available to anyone who needs it in the Tallaght and greater Dublin areas.
