People sought for fundraising treks

THE Irish Cancer Society is seeking people to take part in treks it has organised this year.

This year’s treks include: Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain (June 22-29 and October 5-12) and Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania (October 17-27).

Participating in Trek4Life with a group of like-minded people is not only a fantastic way to see the world, but it also raises significant money for cancer research.

Angela Bergin, from Dublin, took part in Trek4Life last year.

“Myself and my Dad went on the Irish Cancer Society Trek to Jordan in memory of my mother Phyllis who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2011,

? said Ms Bergin.

“We decided to go to raise money for cancer treatment and research.

“It was also at the time of her first anniversary and we thought she would have been proud and interested in the sites from the bible in Jordan so we went as a tribute to her.

Ms Bergin said that while the trek was difficult, it brought together people from different walks of life all affected by cancer in various ways and all trying to make a difference to treatment.

“The whole experience was hugely positive and I would recommend it to anyone to help support the Irish Cancer Society’s important work, or to help deal with a personal loss,

? she stated.

“Jordan itself was a unique experience which we would never have completed otherwise, and the Irish Cancer Society representative on the trip really added to the it.

“The group themselves are all great people, and we’ve been delighted to catch up at trip reunions.

Ms Bergin added:

“All in all, it’s a great opportunity to support a great charity, have a great experience and meet like-minded and well-meaning people.

Meanwhile, the Irish Cancer Society suffered a blow when bad weather hampered fundraising efforts on Daffodil Day (March 22).

Initial indications show that funds being collected from street sellers around the country will be significantly lower than previous years.

You can still support Daffodil Day by Phone: CallSave 1850 60 60 60; make a donation online by visiting www.cancer.ie; Text Daff to 50300 to donate e4 (100 per cent of your donation will go to the Daffodil Day); or you can buy a virtual daffodil on the Irish Cancer Society’s Facebook page.
