New school opening on the Southside next year

The Department of Education announced recently that a new primary school will be established on the Southside in time for September 2014.

The school will open with one or two junior infant classes depending on parental demand.

The Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn, has invited submissions for patronage of the school by the end of June.

The D4 Educate Together Start-up group warmly welcomed the announcement.

Local parents formed the D4 Educate Together Start-up group in 2011 to campaign for a new school for the area.

Jessica Ryan, chairperson, said:

“We are thrilled with the announcement about a new primary school in the Sandymount/Ringsend area in 2014.

“Eighteen months ago a group of interested parents sat in my living room and began this campaign. Our first goal was to get a new school opened by 2014. The second was to make that school an Educate Together school. Now that we know the school is opening we will continue to work hard to get an Educate Together School for the 450 children already on our pre-enrolment lists. It’s a great day for so many families in the area.”

Local TD, Kevin Humphreys said: “The announcement about the school opening in the Sandymount/ Ringsend area is a great development for our local community.

“Having worked with the Dublin 4 Educate Together Start-up group on this campaign I know that there are so many families who will benefit from a new school.

“I remain committed to ensuring that parents in our area have access to educational choice and I know that Educate Together has a strong campaign underway in Dublin 4. I commend their efforts in raising awareness and funds for the campaign.
