New cemetery plan for Dublin 15

UP TO 5,000 new grave plots could be available in Dublin 15 if a planning application for a cemetery at Priorstown House, Scribblestown, is granted permission.

The application was lodged with Fingal County Council last month and closes for submissions on Wednesday (April 24).

The application proposes changing the use of residential premises to cemetery, demolishing an existing outbuilding and creating a new caretaker’s living facilities.

Alterations will be made to an existing outbuilding to create a crematorium and the proposal includes a car park for 114 vehicles, overflow parking and seven parking spaces for staff.

Permission for a cemetery with 3,840 plots on the same site was previously refused in 2010, partly on the grounds that the

“development would be visually obtrusive and seriously injure the amenities of the area

?.

Dublin West Fianna Fáil councillor David McGuinness believes a new cemetery is needed to cater for a growing population in the area.

He welcomed news that an application is currently with Fingal County Council.

“Residents have campaigned for years for this service to be provided and this may just be the solution for all concerned,

? he said.

“I have highlighted over recent years the need for an increase in grave plots for a greater Blanchardstown population which has grown to over 100,000 people.

“Residents have always made the case, particularly in the Castleknock region, that a cemetery close to their homes was the ideal solution to an issue that has caused significant anxiety due to the ever-increasing age profile in the community.

“This represents a possible solution for the many families who have lobbied over the years for more grave sites.
