AN appeal has gone out to residents of Dun Laoghaire to save their local post office.

An Post is considering closing the office on Lower George’s Street. According to An Post, this is partly because the postmistress has decided to retire from the business after many years.

However, the company has insisted that before any decision is made, interested parties will be invited to submit their views on the matter.

A spokesperson for An Post said:

“In coming to a decision the company will take account of network coverage needs, the level of business at the office, customer access to services elsewhere and the capacity of neighbouring offices to handle business if the office closes.

“Following consideration of any views received the company will then proceed to take a final decision in this matter.

Local Fianna Fail councillor, Cormac Devlin, is encouraging local residents and traders to make their feelings known to An Post directly before the deadline on April 9.

“This post office is an institution in the town and has served countless customers for many decades, diligently and effectively,

? he said.

“As one of the longest established premises in the town, it has become part of the fabric of the town.

“I have requested that An Post make contact with the local Senior Citizens Group and various other relevant community groups.

He added:

“I want to thank the staff for their service to the community over the years and I look forward to the views and comments from the local community.

Cllr Devlin said interested parties could make their views known by writing to Fred Quinn, Retail Operations Manager, An Post, 3B GPO, Dublin 1.
