AN POST has decided to extend its deadline for expressions of interest in taking over Finglas Post Office which is facing imminent closure.
The decision came less than 24 hours after locals gathered outside the post office in Finglas Village for a public plea to keep it open.
The deadline for applications for providing a post office service to the Finglas Village was due to close on Tuesday, March 19, but An Post has extended the deadline until Friday, April 5.
It’s understood the change of heart came following representations from local politicians and it will allow additional time for anybody considering making an application.
If nobody comes forward with an application, local residents will have to travel to Clearwater or Charlestown for their postal services.
The deadline extension was welcomed by local Fianna Fail councillor, Paul McAuliffe.
“Any relocation of the post office outside the village would be a massive blow for the village traders and the community groups who are working to improve the area and protect jobs,
? he said.
“My preference would be for it to stay in a central location.

In last week’s Northside People a spokesperson for An Post confirmed that it is looking for expressions of interest for the provision of post office services in Finglas.
“It is open to anybody to put forward their business case,
? he said.
Meanwhile, there was another development for Finglas Village last week with news that an application for an amusement arcade had been refused.
The news was welcomed by local Labour Party representatives Deputy John Lyons and Cllrs John Redmond and Steve Wrenn.
“We have been against this proposal from the very start and submitted strong objections to the City Council and An Bord Pleanala. Thankfully, common sense has prevailed and the amusement arcade application has been refused.
