ARTISTIC second level students from across Dublin are being urged to get their hands dirty with industrial, electrical, commercial or domestic waste products and transform them into pieces of fashion art.
The call comes as the January 31 deadline for entries to the 2013 Junk Kouture Recycled Fashion competition looms and it’s already attracting plenty of interest from creative students.
Last year local girl, Sarah Cashlin from Mount Sackville Secondary School, Castleknock, reached the grand final with her funky design
‘The Trashy Princess’ made from plastic bags.
Sarah was inspired by designers Dior and Vera Wang and organisers of Junk Kouture will be hoping this year’s students will follow in the Northsider’s footsteps with some equally unique creations.
Started in 2010 by entrepreneurs Elizabeth O’Donnell and Troy Armour from Donegal, the Junk Kouture competition has seen thousands of teenagers’ work submitted over the past two years. And it’s resulted in some spectacular and awe-inspiring pieces gracing the competition’s regional and national catwalks.
“We’re always intrigued to know just what the students will come up with at the competition’s regional heats, but we’ve been really blown away at the standard and levels of creativity as well as the cool things which these kids have done with other people’s junk,
? said Ms O’Donnell.
Sponsored by the European Recycling Platform (ERP), the only pan-European compliance scheme for electronic waste and battery recycling, Junk Kouture is the leading fashion and art competition for secondary school students across Ireland.
All entries are reviewed by judges, including supermodel Faye Dinsmore and TV Presenter Daren Kennedy, who must whittle them down to just 80 from each region.
Designers of the chosen outfits become semi-finalists and are in with a chance of being selected for a grand final which will be held in The Bord Gais Energy Theatre on April 19.
There’s
?¬20,000 worth of prizes up for grabs including
?¬2,500 in cash for the winning school.
The competition is open to all second level students. For further information visit junkkouture.com or the Facebook page at Facebook.com/junkkouture.
