EFFORTS are underway to raise over
?¬100,000 to refurbish a monument in Glasnevin Cemetery in time for the centenary of the 1916 Rising.
The National Graves Association (NGA) is trying to raise the money for the significant project in the St Paul’s section of the cemetery, which is the burial place of many of the rank and file volunteers of the Easter Rising.
Famous artist Robert Ballagh has enthusiastically got behind the fundraising effort by producing a special work of art to be sold to raise money for the project.
The well-renowned Dublin artist has reworked in his own style the iconic image of the
‘Birth of the Irish Republic’ by Walter Paget to produce limited edition prints that are for at a price of
?¬350.
The print is limited to 300 copies which has further increased demand for the artwork.
More than 120 of these collectors prints, which are signed, stamped and numbered by the artist, have already sold.
According to Matt Doyle, secretary of the NGA, it was a
“real honour
? to get Robert Ballagh on board.
“We were delighted when he said he’d assist us,
? Mr Doyle told Northside People.
“The demand for these one-off prints has been incredible.
“All the money raised will go towards the project which will see the restoration of the memorial in St Paul’s which dates back to 1966.
“The job itself is fairly straight-forward. It’s just expensive and will involve the cladding of seven upright structures in Irish granite and the repaving of the groundwork which spans 120 feet on either side in Limestone.
