ANYONE who thinks that the annual Christmas Day swim at the Forty Foot is the famed Dublin bathing spot’s busiest day of the year better think again as the annual Fun Mini Triathlon takes place at 11am on Saturday, November 17.
And organisers promise it to be bigger and better than ever.
Organised by Christy Dunne and the Forty Foot’s 11 O’ Clock Club in order to raise vital funds for the charity Action Breast Cancer, the event involves participants taking a quick dip in the icy waters of the Irish sea, then speeding away for a hearty walk or run, followed by a short cycle to round off the day’s exercise regime.
Christy said:
“When we first ran this Fun Mini Triathlon in 2007, we raised
?¬1,700 for cancer research and thought
‘well that’s it, we’ve done our bit for charity’.
“But people kept coming up to us afterwards asking when the next Fun Mini Triathlon was taking place. So due to popular demand we’ve held one each year since 2007. To date, we’ve raised about
?¬195,000 in total for cancer research since we first began.

He added:
“That figure is positive proof that anyone who believes that current economic woes have prevented Irish people from donating to worthy causes better think again. Every year our event seems to get bigger and bigger, against all our expectations.
“Last year we had grandparents, children, fathers, mothers, teenagers, you name it, people from all over Dublin and from all corners of the globe, USA, China and Uzbekistan plunging into the Irish Sea, walking, cycling and basically doing their bit to help raise money for an extremely worthy cause.
“This year we’re organising refreshments galore, with plenty of craic, ceoil and gallons of hot beverages for everyone. Also, for those who might not be up to taking the plunge, we’re urging them to come along anyway and help cheer the many participants in the fun day for all the family.
