Workers shocked at Tempest closure

OVER 30 workers were left dumbstruck two weeks ago when they arrived at their workplace in Santry to find that the business had gone into voluntary liquidation.

Employees of women’s clothing store Tempest in Omni Park Shopping Centre say they were shocked and disgusted that they were given no prior notice of the closure of the store.

Instead they arrived at work on October 24 to find the business literally shutting up shop.

Tempest Retail Limited entered into a creditors’ voluntary liquidation and closed with immediate effect on October 24.

A spokesperson for Tempest said the store in Omni Park was the only trading store of Tempest Retail Limited and that the closure was

“both unavoidable and deeply regrettable

?.

“Other stores trading as

‘Tempest’ are owned by Menarys Retail Limited which is unaffected, as are all Menarys stores,

? he told Northside People.

A liquidator, FPM Accountants in Belfast, was due to be formally appointed to the company this week.

Tempest Retail Ireland convened a creditors’ meeting on Monday, November 5 where the appointment will be made.

Local TD John Lyons (Lab) described the closure of the store as

“very sad

? for the workers and their families.

“Every job is crucial in our communities and the Government is working to support small and medium business to retain jobs and to create new ones,

? he stated.

“I will be meeting Retail Ireland, the national representative body for the entire retail sector, to see how we can further support retail businesses on top of the measures already outlined in the Action Plan for Jobs.

Meanwhile, there was some good news on the employment front last week with the announcement of 82 jobs at the newest branch of McDonald’s in Airside, Swords.

At the opening of the fast-food store, McDonald’s announced that it is to create 700 jobs across the country over the next three years.

The new restaurants will be based all over the country, including locations in Dublin, Kilkenny, Ballina and Kildare Village.

A number of other sites are under consideration and recruitment for the jobs is expected to get underway in January.
