A NORTHSIDE councillor is seeking support as he prepares for his second Dublin Marathon to raise funds for St Francis Hospice, Raheny.
Cllr Tom Brabazon (FF), who represents the Donaghmede ward, took part in the 2011 marathon for the first time and raised
?¬5,000 for the Hospice.
Cllr Brabazon, who is relatively new to running, finished in the very respectable time of four hours and 18 minutes last time out.
“When I finished the marathon last year I never thought that I could gather myself together to give it another go,
? he told Northside People.
“I couldn’t walk without pain for at least a week afterwards.
“But when I realised that together we had raised
?¬5,000 for St Francis Hospice in Raheny the sense of achievement was wonderful.
“I was brought on a tour of the Hospice facilities in Raheny in February of this year and was overwhelmed by the sense of peace.
“I know that the effort, support and dedication of the staff is unrelenting for the many patients that pass through their doors.
?
Cllr Brabazon said the dignity and care that the patients receive at St Francis Hospice is
“second to none
?.
“Funding for the Hospice has been radically cut year on year by successive governments,
? he stated.
“In many other areas where funding cuts are made there can be a second chance for those affected. However, at the Hospice this is the last chance. That’s why I am running again.
?
Cllr Brabazon, who is not a member of a running club, said his training hasn’t gone as well this year as last.
“However, a couple of weeks ago, I hit the 20-mile mark,
? stated that father-of-four.
“I picked up a slight injury but I am on the road to recovery. Come hell or high water, I’ll be off again on October 29.
“I won’t be concerned with my time. The primary aim is to raise money for the Hospice – time is secondary.
“It’s an achievement for anyone to complete the marathon. If I get the same time as last year or do a bit better, I’ll be happy.
“There is great camaderie among the runners and the crowd really get behind you. The Dublin Marathon is very special and I’m looking forward to it.
?
Cllr Brabazon said St Francis Hospice and its patients need support.
“I fully appreciate that things are tighter this year than ever before but I am appealing to people to sponsor my efforts once again,
? he added.
“Those who are in need of the brilliant palliative care given need help in their final chapter.
“Please give as generously as you can – every amount no matter how small will be gratefully received.
