CONCERNS have been expressed following the closure of one of Ireland’s best-known meat processing plants.
Olhausen, which opened over 126 years ago, ceased trading at its plants in Coolock, Blanchardstown and Mongahan last week.
Artane ward councillor Larry O’Toole (SF) said he was angry and frustrated over the loss of an estimated 160 jobs due to the company’s closure.
“With the end of Olhausen another household name in Irish manufacturing will disappear,
? he stated.
“Like many Dubliners I know the shop in Talbot Street which has been a landmark for over a hundred years, selling its award winning sausages.
“Imagine, it has been there through two world wars and all the hardship of the 1950s, but it took this Government’s economic policy to see it off.
?
Dublin North East TD Terence Flanagan (FG) has also expressed his concern at news of the closure.
“Olhausen has been trading since 1896 and it has developed over the years into one of Ireland’s leading suppliers of quality pork based meats,
? he said.
“The company employed a number of local people in its production facility in Coolock and I am very sorry that it has gone into receivership.
“This company has always focused on the domestic market, and the difficulties it is facing are unfortunately similar to the difficulties being faced by other companies following the collapse of the economy.
?
In addition, Dublin North East TD Tommy Broughan (Lab) said he intends to raise the closure of the Coolock Olhausen plant in the Dail due to what he has described as further damage to the job sector in North Dublin.
“Olhausen has been in Coolock for decades and has a long track record as a valuable local employer,
? stated Deputy Broughan.
“It also had a reputation for outstanding quality and reasonably priced meat products among local residents in Coolock and the wider Northside area who bought meat for their families on a regular basis at the local plant and shop.
