Sporty slimmers go the distance

CLONTARF and Donnycarney slimmers were out doing their bit to celebrate worldwide sporting fever by walking, running, cycling and swimming the equivalent distance from Dublin to London.

The 180 slimmers, who attend the two Slimming World groups, committed to the global challenge after losing an incredible 465 stone between them since the start of the year.

The slimmers raised great awareness and money for the ISPCC as part of Slimming World’s Miles for Smiles campaign, which motivated thousands of slimmers to become more active while raising money for charity.

Both groups met in St Anne’s Park, Raheny, to take part in a walk with children, partners and even dogs at the ready.

Members were able to walk with new friends and share recipes along with their love of the fabulous food optimising plan that allows them to eat unlimited amounts of pasta rice and potatoes, meat, poultry and fish not to mention fruit and vegetables.

Sinéad Donaghey, a consultant with the Slimming World Clontarf group, said:

“The best thing for me was hearing that people that had met that morning from different sessions had exchanged numbers and have been meeting up with their new

‘walking buddy’ since the first day out.

Alison Kelly, from the Donnycarney group, added:

“It’s easy to fall out of the habit of being active when you’ve got a busy life and the weather gives you plenty of opportunity to make excuses.

“It’s often the case when you’re overweight you can feel self-conscious about doing any sort of exercise, but having a good friend can help keep you motivated.
