A TEN-YEAR-OLD boy from Malahide will shortly be heading off to represent his country in the Diabetes Junior Cup.
Séan McCabe will be part of the first ever Republic of Ireland team of children with Type 1 diabetes representing their country in the competition.
The tournament, now in its sixth year, will see over 130 children with Type 1 diabetes from 12 countries travelling to the Olympic Stadium in Lausanne, Switzerland, in late August to participate in a 7-a-side competition.
Over 80 children with Type 1 diabetes between the ages of 8 and 12 years from all over the country attended trials in Dalymount Park and Sean was one of 11 players selected.
Séan who has Type 1 diabetes and plays locally for Malahide United, said it’s a great privilege to follow in the footsteps of his Irish heroes.
“Just because I have diabetes doesn’t mean I can’t achieve my goals,
? he stated.
Séan’s parents will be travelling to Switzerland and his dad Stephen said:
“Sean is delighted to be a part of the first ever Irish team and we are extremely proud of him. He is an inspiration to us all.
“He has a great outlook and takes a positive approach to everything he does in life.
?
Adam Berigan (10), from Glasnevin, is another local who has made the team.
“It would be my greatest achievement and I would be so proud to wear an Ireland jersey,
? said Adam.
The team, led by coach Sean Francis, a former League of Ireland footballer, includes players from nine different counties.
“I am delighted to be involved in this initiative and I am looking forward to the tournament,
? said Mr Francis.
“The team trained over the summer months and I am sure we will give a good account ourselves at the finals.
?
Former Republic of Ireland star Niall Quinn met up with the team at their latest training session and offered plenty of advice on how to prepare for international tournament football.
“It is every child’s dream to represent their country and this is a fantastic opportunity for these players to live that dream,
? he said.
Diabetes Ireland chief executive Kieran O’Leary said living with Type 1 diabetes is not easy.
“We are delighted to be able to provide this unique, positive experience for these players and their families,
? he stated.
“It is our firm intention to be involved in this event for many years to come offering more and more children with diabetes the opportunity to participate.

The Diabetes Junior Cup takes place on August 25 and 26.
