Park repairs hampered by poor weather

The OPW plans to reinstate the grounds

POOR weather is hampering efforts to restore the Phoenix Park to its former glory after the recent series of concerts there

Barriers are still visible while waterlogged, upturned ground still scars the park, which is one of the city’s most popular tourist destinations.

The OPW (Office of Public Works) has been criticised for the delay in repairing the damage, some of which was caused during the controversial Swedish House Mafia gig.

Just two days earlier the park played host to a crowd of 45,000 people for the Stone Roses concert, which passed off without incident.

According to a passing motorist, who regularly drives through the Phoenix Park, the remnants of these events has left an eye-sore in the popular amenity.

“The gigs took place weeks ago, yet the barriers are still up and clearly visible from the main road through the park,

? he told Northside People.

“It’s a disgrace and this needs to be sorted out sooner rather than later.

“Thousands of visitors pass through the park on a daily basis and that’s what they see. It doesn’t say much for how we treat our environment.

The furious Dubliner added:

“I hope that whoever is responsible for the clean-up isn’t waiting for better weather because we’ll soon find ourselves in autumn and winter when the conditions will get even worse and more unpredictable.

A spokesperson for the Office of Public Works told Northside People it asked the promoter to leave the barriers in place until it had time to examine what works, if any, were required to reinstate the grounds.

“We need some fine weather to allow us to do this as the site is currently waterlogged,

? she stated.

“A bond is provided to the OPW by MCD before the concert takes place.

“This bond will be used to repair any damage to the grounds as result of the concert.

“If the damage exceeds the amount of the bond, MCD will be billed for the additional monies.

The OPW, MCD and Dublin City Council representatives have all been invited to attend the next meeting of the Dublin Central Joint Policing Committee on September 6 to discuss recent events in the park.
